In some cases, railings may not be installed indoors in glass curtain walls, but certain conditions must be met.

According to relevant specifications and actual engineering experience, railings may not be installed in the following cases:

Laminated glass: Laminated glass is non-scattering glass. Even if it is hit and broken, the fragments will be firmly bonded by the glue layer and will not scatter. The use of non-scattering laminated glass eliminates the risk of indoor personnel falling when going out, so anti-collision railings may not be installed. For example, the Guangzhou Tower is 600 meters high and the glass curtain wall is 460 meters high. Due to the use of double-laminated hollow glass, there are no railings; the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (828 meters) uses 8mm semi-tempered outer glass, 16mm hollow layer, and (6mm+6mm) laminated inner glass. The inner glass is laminated glass and will not scatter. All three pieces of glass are ultra-clear glass, which is less likely to explode. The floor-to-ceiling glass on the 162 floors does not have railings or other anti-collision facilities.

Use single-piece tempered glass with a thickness of more than 10mm: Multiple finite element calculations and analyses show that tempered glass with a thickness of more than 10mm can resist the impact of the human body without breaking. In fact, tempered glass with a thickness of 10mm has been used as an independent glass railing in many projects, which shows that its impact resistance has been recognized. In addition, the curtain wall glass is supported on four sides rather than cantilevered, and the working conditions are better.

Full-glass curtain wall, point-supported curtain wall and cable net curtain wall: In order to pursue maximum transparency, architects do not want any obstruction, even a thin railing is unacceptable. As long as the glass of these curtain walls uses a laminated process to ensure that it will not fly away, or a single-piece tempered glass with a thickness of more than 10mm is used to ensure that the human body cannot break it, there is no need to set a railing.

Ground floor glass: Tests and calculations show that tempered glass with a thickness of 10mm or more cannot be broken by normal people, and laminated glass has no worries about flying away. In addition, the ground elevations of the indoor and outdoor floors of the ground floor are similar, so there is no danger of falling. Therefore, whether to set railings for the ground floor glass can be handled at discretion. Judging from the existing projects at home and abroad, most of the ground floor glass does not have railings.

Inner curtain wall of double curtain wall: Double-layer ventilated glass curtain wall is similar to hollow glass, consisting of outer glass and inner glass. As long as the outer glass is laminated, no matter how the inner glass is broken, people will not fall down. And there is a door to the inner curtain wall, and it is impossible to set a railing that hinders traffic for the floor-to-ceiling glass door. In addition, with the outer curtain wall, the inner curtain wall is equivalent to an indoor glass partition, and usually there will be no railings on both sides.

However, if the above conditions are not met, railings or other anti-collision facilities are generally required. At the same time, even if railings can be omitted, it is necessary to ensure that the quality and installation of the glass meet the relevant standards to ensure the safety of personnel.
