How to choose the appropriate window glass thickness?

2024-08-06 Back

Choosing the appropriate window glass thickness requires considering multiple factors, including the size of the window, the use environment, the sound insulation and heat insulation requirements, and safety requirements. Here are some specific suggestions:

1. Window area: Generally speaking, the larger the glass area, the required glass thickness should be increased accordingly.

For a single piece of glass with an area of no more than 2 square meters, 5mm thickness is sufficient; for a single piece of glass with an area of no more than 3 square meters, 6mm thickness can be used.

If you want to use a larger insulating glass (such as a 3 square meter insulating glass), the thickness of each piece of glass must reach 6mm.

However, the choice of glass thickness in actual home decoration does not necessarily have to be completely in accordance with the standard. It also depends on the quality of the glass, whether it is filled with inert gas, local conditions, merchant products and experience. When making large glass, you can listen to the merchant's advice.

2. Sound insulation requirements: If the house is located in a noisy environment such as a road with heavy traffic, near a highway, or an elevated road, the sound insulation requirements are higher, and thicker glass or special glass types can be selected. For example, hollow laminated glass usually has a good sound insulation effect, and the thickness of its two original glass sheets generally ranges from 5mm to 10mm; if the noise environment is more complex or the requirements are higher, you can also consider multi-layer windows or consult professionals. However, the influence of factors such as glass thickness, film layer, hollow layer, and different glass thickness combinations on the sound insulation effect is not absolute, so there is no need to deliberately pursue too thick glass.

3. Heat insulation requirements: If you want good glass insulation effect, you can pay attention to its solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) and heat transfer coefficient (K value or U value). The lower the SHGC value and the smaller the K value, the better the heat insulation effect. You can also refer to the type of glass for selection. For example, hollow glass can play a certain role in heat insulation. If you want to have a better effect in heat insulation, you can choose three-glass two-cavity glass.

4. Lighting effect: If you want good indoor lighting, you can ask the merchant about the visible light transmittance (light transmittance) of the glass. Generally, the light transmittance of normal 5+5 or 6+6 hollow glass can meet most needs. It should be noted that Low-e glass, large glass (increased thickness of single-piece glass), and multi-layer glass (increased number of layers will reduce light transmittance and may turn green) may affect the lighting effect. If you care about lighting, you can tell the merchant to add ultra-clear glass to the ordinary glass to improve the overall light transmittance.

5. Safety factors: For high-rise, floor-to-ceiling windows or windows with a single-piece glass width exceeding a certain value, it is recommended to use tempered glass to ensure safety. For example, for high-rise or single-sided glass with a width exceeding 3 square meters, it is recommended to use tempered glass on the innermost side; try to temper windows larger than 1.5 square meters.

Pay attention to the processing technology and quality of glass, such as the sealing performance of insulating glass. Good sealing can effectively ensure sound insulation and heat insulation. When choosing, you can consider the above factors comprehensively and determine the appropriate window glass thickness based on your personal economic strength and actual needs.
